A little embarrassed to mention it .

Recently , I just have lost my first opportunity to work in game industry . The reason is quite simply . I failed in my entrance test . What I really cared is if I have made some serious jokes . In my test I was asked to check the scene if "+Y = up" using Maxscript . I really cann't understand it clearly . And I designed a script to move someObject along Y axis . And of course I was told that I failed in my test . And after a short discussion with my firends , we came into a conclusion that it's may want me to check if the model's Y axis is pointting straight up . So I send a E-mail to the comany's hr department saying if their test has some problem in description . And soon after I find that because of some precision problems in our computer , Y axis really cann't point straight up perfectly . I send another E-mail to say if their test is wrong . This my first test in this field . I mean I may learn Max for a long time . But really have none experience in testing or game industry . I would like to know if I was over confident about my self ? Or "+Y = up" really a common thing but only me cann't unstand it .So what I've done(sending E-mail to tell them if their test is wrong)is very stupid ,is excuse and made something unfriendly to the company ?

What I really care is should I feel sorry for what I am doing ,did I mistake something so I misundstand the company I mentioned above .

I suspect they actually wanted you to check the "handedness" of the coord system.

you do this by checking the sign of the determinant.

I'm not sure to be honest. The question isn't 100% clear as you said.

Best of luck, and don't let one set-back stop you from trying to achieve your dreams.

determinantsign ?
In fact , English is not the first langague in our country . My test was made in english . I tryed to ask them what's "+Y = up" really mean ?It's more than english I think .But it seems that they also want to check my english skill .So I just cann't know what 's it really mean before my work . I think i should ask them what the "+Y = up" in english:P

Yes, please post the exact question.

It'll be interesting to see what they actually meant.

Also, don't feel bad HuaMulan. There will be other opportunities. use this experience to learn from.

I assume as it was for games it was to see which axis was 'up' in that app, max's being Z which is weird, so importers/exporters for game stuff has to take that into account to change it to Y which is generally normal.
Seems weird to not get a job over 1 question though?

Most systems have +x going left to right, and +y going down to up.

Some systems have +z going into the screen (1), others -ve z going into the screen. (2)

This is the difference between left handed and right handed coordinates systems.

Hold your thumb and first two fingers to represent the three axis, then point them as indicated above, and you'll be able to make (1) with your left hand, and (2) with your right.

Thumb - up (usually +y)
Finger next to thumb (whatever that's called) into/out of screen (z)
Other finger, left-right (usually +x)

Hi Hua,

Don't get bothered by their stupid entry test.
This seems like the most stupid entry exam a game dev company can ask for.
Don't give up and keep your head straight, you never know what the future will bring :-)

I assume you went in for a technical role rather than an art/design role?

I don't know where you went for this interview, but if they're an english speaking company then you not being able to fully understand them or even communicate properly back is going to be a big downfall on getting employed there. Made even worse by you getting back to them to further question their question... y'know?

We've had some pretty talented people come for interviews where I work, most of them after lead positions... they certainly had a nice enough portfolio, but just trying to speak to them was difficult, having to re-word things in a simpler form. This is made even worse when they're applying for lead positions, as they'll be responsible for a team and required to communicate properly with the people they're in charge of.
