a bit of computer component info...
show user profile  Bolteon
well, it's time for me to get a new computer... this i7 920 is getting old in the tooth. things have progressed severely since i built this rig back in `09. 12gb of ram was more expensive than the 48gb below!

just wanted to get your guys' opinion on this, how far out are the sandy bridge xeon's?

eppp... just noticed the sr-2 mobo is listed as dual quad core for the cpu type. can it handle the westmere ep's?

Why 4Gb memory modules? Bigger modules = less modules = better stability. At least thats what i have read a couple of times, so not sure if its actually true :)

there's 12 sockets; and the mobo can only do 48gb max. so i'm assuming the 4gb sticks is what it wants when configured to 48gb

official word on SBE xeons is Q1 2012 so any day now.. or a few weeks.. or a month. No rumors to speak of other than that evga SRX looks pretty much ready so i expect it will launch alongside the chips.
sexy.

according to an old (october 2011) intel presentation the lowest end dual socket capable 6 cores are priced at $400 and 8 core $1100 (these are 2ghz models but if they oc anything like the previous generation it shouldnt be a problem). Interestingly enough the lowest end 4 core is priced at $200 so you could potentially get an 8 core solution with a bitchin motherboard and one hell of an upgrade path for pretty much the same price as a 6 core i7 with a midrange motherboard.

benefits to the srx over the sr2?

seems like a good time to wait a minute before buying that gear if the sandy bridge based xeon's are this close...

sbe is around 13% faster clock to clock then a westmere-ex and they clock around 10% higher so core to core i'd say around 25% performance bump, of course if you decide to shell out the cash for a 8 core version you also get 33% more cores = 65% more performance. Afaik SRX also supports 96gb of ram, has 4x SAS + 6x SATA (22 commercial hdd's), twice the pci-e bandwidth and next year this time 10 core IBE's should be available for upgrade.

Also ASUS is coming out with their dual socket R too so maybe we'll see some competition or even a reasonable price tag.. nah probably not :p

just be careful with your EVGA's man. Last time I bought a top of the line EVGA classified It wouldn't take my CPU (980x) and the top two PCI express wouldnt work. there's $800 sitting in a box collecting dust in my wardrobe.

the people were majorly dodgy. I sent them the serial number and a request for return, but they said the serial number was never on their system. so some one obviously just sent the item and charged the money. sucks ass :(

did you buy it off ebay?

evga is a large company; it's rather difficult for something that large to be purposefully dodgy... not saying anything but i've never run into a situation where common sense and the letter of the law didn't favor those who are in the right.

scorptech.com.au

online computer store. normally their stuff is ok, but in this instance they insisted that I didn't but it from them but after a while I just got too busy to pursue. In any case, it looks like an awesome board, just be sure to keep onto your receipts etc ;)

I'm also on a Core i7 920 at the moment with 12 gb of ram.
Starting to come to upgrade-ville soon enough. I figured since I did upgrade the graphics card it should last me a bit longer.
But the day of the upgrades are indeed drawing closer.
Once I'm done with some paymentplans I might invest in a bigass upgrade. Dual CPU would be nice. Especially 48+ GB of RAM.
Let us know some benchmarks once your build is done, mate!
