(More specific) How to achieve this lighting?
show user profile  FoxTrax
Okay, I'm a n00b at 3DS Max. I think you all get that by now. To give you an example of my experience, I know how to UV map, animate, and I know the basics of rendering, but I don't know the complex parts of rendering.

Anyway, here's a similar image to the one I posted before.

As it turns out, all I'm curious about is the lighting of the render. If I may describe it, when you first see the image, it looks 3D (which it is), but when you zoom in and look closely, you realize that there's very little shading, and it looks kinda flat. I know, this description doesn't help much, but it was the best I could give.

How would it be possible to achieve this with either V-Ray or Mental Ray? Do I just place a bunch of plane lights around? Do I lay down an Infinite light in a specific spot? Because I have a bunch of Sonic models, and I want to learn how to render at least close to how Sega does it.

Dude. Stop posting massive images of sonic. Look in our FAQ... 800x600 limit.

First things first, take that large photo of sonic down.

Secondly, I find it odd that the sonic character actually only has one eye, sort of freaks me out.

Thirdly (and most importantly)- Lighting is one of the HARDEST things to do (in my opinion) when it comes to 3d stuff. You could have a baller model, with titty-boy textures and about 5 beautiful, half-naked females running around and your project would still suck if your lighting sucked.

That being said, there is no 1 2 answer for lighting.... Beyond the technical stuff about 3d lighting, there are loads of things about lighting theory in general. Get a grasp on both of those, do some tutorials, read some articles, take a break and then do it all over again.

You can do it! Don't be discouraged by Black Mariah friendly banter...

Just render out a fucking 1920000x1800000px image. Print it on gigantic post cards. That's clearly what SEGA did.

Your gigantic sonic discourages people from helping you.

Technically Sonic's eyeballs intersect?
