Ahahahaha.
I have just been given permissions to use the new supercomputer Iridis3 for my 3D work. I just did a test animation 100 frames render of an old project that took me a good 18 hours to render. Each frame took under a second to render accross about 30 nodes. :D It took just over 5 seconds.
Anyone got any projects they are struggling to render?

Not yet, Mental Ray at the moment. The course i am on is really only in its infancy. I think that myself and one other graduate who is now moving more towards archaeological work are sort of setting the bar for where things go. Im focusing more on becoming more technical with the software, so, basically, if i can sell an idea/software to my lecturer and he can sort out funding, we can get whatever we need as long as it can be proven to be useful for research. If i can prove VRay is more physically accurate than Mental Ray, then i might be able to sort it out.
We just got another 13 licenses for Vue this morning to use with the supercomputer and i am currently convincing him to get FumeFx. I threw Allan McKay an email this morning with some questions. Hopefully, it will all go through smoothly.

I am very, very jealous. I wish I had that sort of power for Mental Ray!

Thanks Nik, its going to help us out a great deal. Hopefully with a lot of work my skills with Max can justify me having the hardware i am working with over the next few years.

With this power you could take over Russia!!!!
Edit: With porn!!
Edit Edit: Seriously though. Keep us posted when you get vray nodes. I am very interested in your offer. I could even send you money and my first born. Anything to not pay a bunch for a render farm.

coxy... shoot me an IM or email; i could get you setup with an evaluation set of licenses to help you guys see if you want to go the vray route.
keep in mind, vray is a shit ton cheaper then MR. for example, you get 10k licenses to render via farm for every 1 user license. aka free farm rendering.
(and btw, i have a test i've been waiting for a render farm to come in off of a clients project that takes about 12 hours per frame on a quad core i7 with 12gb of ram)

12 hours a frame? Are you mad? Can a computer even take that much before it implodes on itself?
