.dat file extension
show user profile  FlightSim
Good Afternoon,
I was wondering if I could get some help on how I would open a 3d model with a .dat file.
Is there a conversion I need to do, an importer?

Thanks,
Walt.

A .dat file is a file with no extension. It can be any type of file really. windows xp used to rename unkonwn files as .dat ive seen it happend a few times on my win7 machine too.

The fix is usually just renaming the file with the correct extenstion. If you dont know what extension it is... i dont either :/

Edit: Found this doesnt help much but lets you understand what your working with. http://filext.com/file-extension/DAT

The DAT file type is primarily associated with 'Data'. Can be just about anything: text, graphic, or general binary data. There is no specific structure for a .DAT file. You can use an editor like EditPad Pro to look inside a .DAT file and possible determine its contents and relationship with a program. If you are looking for information on the file INDEX.DAT please see the FAQ.

Campbell,

Thank you so much for the help!
I'm 99.999% sure that the .dat file is a 3d model, as it's the only file in the subfolder of the game pertaining to the vehicle.

I'm going to keep at it, and if I figure something out, I'll post.

Thank you so much again for taking the time.

.dat is often used as an arbitrary data format, meaning that it's specific to the game in question. What you need to do is search for tools (importer/exporter) for getting this into and out of Max.

Maybe find a modding forum for the game in question.

I've looked everywhere for an importer and found nothing.
I'm surprised I'm the only one who's had this problem.

I've managed to capture it in a .3dxml file, now, is there anyway to convert this and get it into max?

Thanks.

Try to rename the extention to .max, .3ds or .obj and other max extentions.

I dont think you need to to convert it. Renaming should be enough.

The name of my file was ????.3dxml

I've tried renaming it with that extension but it doesn't actually change the type, just changes the name

Go into control panel and turn on something like 'show file extensions'. Then rename it :D Then, if you feel like it turn file extensions off again....

Its not the name but the extention you should rename.

File.dat should be renamed to file.3ds or file.obj etc...

Thank you all for the responses.
I've never understood why changing the file extension gets it to open, in this case, it didn't

Just getting an unknown file input error. :(

It sounds like you used 3DVIA Printscreen. If that's the case, there's a plugin to import it into 3ds Max: http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?p=27425#p27425

Hey, thanks Krogoth!
I installed that about an hour ago. My problem is the model is catching is way off. It's deformed in alot of places and the template i place on it is out of wack in 3ds max when it lines up in game.

Also, the model im capturing is very jagged.

Ok, after using every capture software I can find, I've come to the conclusion that this is out of my talent. I'm going to turn it into a paid project. I'll make another post.

changing file extension does not change the format. don't suggest daft ideas, it just wastes people's time.

looks like there's a solution here : http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2869
