9K's Winter Break Thread!
show user profile  9krausec
Ok, so my winter break has started about a week ago! This semester has been tough shit for me, so I have not had too much time to do any 3ds Max work. This semester however, I realized that I need to get my ass a movin on the max scene if I want to start seriously progressing at anything CG related. I have started this thread as a single thread for my barrage of different projects I have set out to accomplish over break, working most every day, all day, to complete...

Just as I finally got all the family, holiday stuff taken care of about 4 days ago, my poop turned green and I was bed ridden for the last 3 days with some sort of freak, St.Patty day cold... Great way to start off a winter break of work!

So, enough about my stool... Here is my first project to get me warmed up again-

http://www.3d-palace.com/store/#ecwid:category=840506&mode=product&product=3479276

Dropped some cash because this tutorial looked really sweet.

Here is my progress thus far. I want to get the tank and a few other components done today and tomorrow-

Hopefully I wont get distracted and will get this motorcycle done soonish.

Cheers

Muchos kudos, 9krausec :)
I remember not long ago when you were struggling with topology issues all the time.
It's a pleasure to see how much you've progressed. Keep at it!

As for an older topic of yours, I don't remember if it was suggested already but how about going to a Fine Arts school and keeping learning the 3D/CG stuff on your own? If I wanted to become a game artist or similar, it's definitely what I would do.

haha, thanks for the comments folks!

@Boltean- Why don't you just model one in your sleep? That or you could just house me for a week and let me job shadow you in LA, I'd give you the bike in payment, haha.

still need to figure out how to get an internship setup with my studio; perhaps this summer? yes.

Yes, this summer would work (toward the end most likely).. I got that gig taking photos of houses for realtors around my home town so I'll be able to afford a plane ticket and enough baked beans for a weeks nourishment.

I however won't have enough coin for housing out in LA (like a full blown motel or anything).. So unless there is a hostel around, I might have to sleep in your garage or something?

i'm in san diego now... and there are hostels around but ideally this would be an internship for course credit and we'd somehow figure out sponsorship for those attending so you'd get a flight; and a place to stay.

gotta figure it out... all in due time, come this march things will get serious.

tank sort of threw me off so I had to redo it about 4 times... That's what I get for being sick.. The tank cap isn't 100% complete, I need to make the little flippy flap for it yet..

-------------------------

I figured on top of showing progress, I might as well share a few things that I am learning along the way for people who are starting out with 3ds..

1. Learn the damn hotkey shortcuts.. Don't procrastinate, they help you out so much..

2. Learn how to use edge/face constants.. These constraints used to be some random nuisance for me when I accidentally toggled them on and off with hotkeys, but now they are used oh so very much..

3. Plan your geometry out... There are techniques that will insure things fit together.

4.Snaps are amazing, learn them

5. Right clicking on almost anything will open up a control panel for it (snaps, angle snaps, scale, move, etc...), you can do this to open up and better control your tools for specific jobs.

6. Hotkey for edge constraint is "Shift + X" (I believe this was Mr.G who posted this up in 101 things you didn't know about Max thread.

Hope this helps some new people! I know if I were told some of these things 2 years ago they would of helped me out immensely!

Cheers!

Ok, so. Sorry for jumping around between projects, but this is why I made a winter break thread because I am behind like a beast on work...

This is another project I am doing parallel to the motorcycle..

My goal is to be able to have both of these projects done in 2 weeks (finger crossed...)

So, Below are some photos of a Crown Vic I started for a police cruiser. I plan to use this model in a short public awareness renouncement on safe driving I am filming over the summer.

CC and more to come!

CC please!

Okay. Someone comment on my car! I don't care if you say it looks like poop, but I need some feed back here! Haha...

Working out the side, roof and trunk area..

I am only working with a side a front schematic, no top, so I am sort of piecing things together as I go along (head ache, but good practice)..

Tell me what you think! PLEASE! Find something crappy about it and tell me so I can fix it (be harsh, this is maxforums after all)

Cheers-

Just moving along.. Things are coming together, but that damn weather strip sort of sucked my soul out.

Next few steps-

Door handles
Lights
Roof
Windows
Refine everything

Once again, please crit my work! It helps me out loads to get feedback. Let me know I'm going in the right direction or how to get there..

I guess I should say that this police interceptor is going to be used in a short film that I will be shooting over the summer. It is going to motion tracked in a chase scene with another car.

Hopefully, I can talk to my friend who's father is an officer and actually be able to shoot the non action shots with the real cop car I am modeling off of.

Thank you!
