3dsmax Containers
show user profile  advance-software
Does anyone actually use containers for anything except external referencing ?

If so, what ?

ie. what are the practical applications ?

I use containers to store things. Like orange juice, milk, cabbages, etc.

I used to I used to keep my witty, non-constructive remarks and comments contained. But only in a metaphorical container.

Perhaps wishful thinking, but I was hoping for a semi serious discussion ...

If 3dsmax containers were to vanish and all that was left was the ability to easily externally reference all or part of one scene from another would you miss 3dsmax containers at all ?

I don't believe in containing and segregating objects. It's against my principles.

You should have done a poll.

I still don't see the point of them.

If you want to group stuff independently of other stuff ... put it in a group.

What do you need containers for ? Are there times when you want to group things that aren't in the same hierarchy ? If so, put them in a layer.

polls have fixed answers nik, I'm trying to figure out what use (if any) these things have.

From my understanding containers do not have the functionality of properly working xrefs.
Also, they aren't part of my work flow. I just don't need them for what I do.
Tyson Ibele made good use of vray proxys in his building script but that's not really the same thing
or is it?
What is it you would like these containers to do?
What would you like the xrefs to do?

my testing shows containers provide "correct" xrefing capability unlike legacy max xrefs.

discussing with ad in an attempt to simplify & streamline 3dsmax external referencing.

just checking that I haven't missed anything.

I've got my head around the external referencing, just making sure they're not used for anything else.

seems not. except holding metaphorical cabbages and hamsters.

They are useless, and we all know it. Max should have a proper system.

But... I struggle to care that much about it.

It's true. Jim has been a rock. But my care still ebbs away. Like the water of disinterest, washing over the shores of meh.

Well said Nik. I can almost see the interest waning.

For A-S: you might find this interesting. Or not.
