3DS Max with GTX 670
show user profile  woodmarvels
Hi guys, I got a new computer about a week ago and finished transferring files to realize that 3DS Max 2013 is incredibly unstable using my new GTX 670 graphics card... renders 3x faster than previous system with its i7-3930k.

Anybody else running a system using this graphics card with their 2013 installation? How is max running on it?

install latest drivers from nvidia's website if you haven't do so yet.

then run the maxforums iray benchmark plz. would be interesting to see how it does.

From my understanding, gtx series don't work with iray at all though nVidia is working on having it supported by end of year - I use mentalray... I'm willing to give it a try though - where do I get the file?

I have the latest drivers... still buggy as heck though.

ok - sounds like you're doing all you can at the moment. that's disappointing but such is life on the edge. check reguarly for updates until it's stable. they'll get there.

you can report here (I think) if you're unsure if they're aware of the issue.

you could try turning nitrous off for now - use dx9 driver instead. no idea if that will fix it but it might.

edit: obviously ensure you've installed the latest service / hotfixes for max.

@nik - re: iray versions in the benchmark

I'd switch to just the latest version of iray for benchmarking.

doesn't really matter how some old thing does. we're interested in where the optimal position is.
though maybe a transition phase of keeping previous & current versions if you feel like it.
they might 'do a max' & slow down without realizing it.

Will give it a try and get back to you... gtx series have been out for a long time... don't consider that living on the edge. I wasn't willing to go quadro route - just can't justify it at all.

Since May ?

that's not long. the series has been going for ages (its the consumer range), that model hasn't.

have reported to nvidia for you.. hopefully they'll get a chance to look at this soon.

in the meantime, please ensure your max installation is fully patched so they don't waste time on anyhing that isn't driver related.

I don't see the point of the quadros either.

a reproducible test case of something that fails would be helpful if that's possible.

I literally have 20 seconds before my entire computer freezes and I need to reboot using 2013... doesn't matter what I do, this happens each and every time without fail. I guess I confused "reading about it" and actual release dates for gtx 670.

I found a work-around though, just use 2012 and it works 100% fine without errors or freezing - I have to get to work but when I get back, I'll give your stuff a try and report back.

I have everything patched-up from both nVidia and Autodesk (2012 and 2013). Thanks for your help man!

One more warning - don't buy 3TB internal hard drives, I have two in this new computer, when I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro, it reverted them 2 TB and erased any references from the manufacturer (so seagate doesn't recognize its own drives) so the normal "virtual 800GB" workaround doesn't work or reformatting doesn't return the extra bit - it's lost forever. In hindsignt, should have gotten 3x2TB instead of 2x3TB as it would be been about the same price but WORKED.

well its not really lost forever, you can always repartition the drive...

as for your original post - gpu/cpu renderers are separate so i dont quite get the 3x speed comparison between a graphics card and a processor..? Why the 670 is unstable though i dont know, new hardware + new product from autodesk = good chance of failure. Probably just gonna have to give it some time for both sides to get their software fixed.

Posted my test results (with errors) at

Mr. Stabby: 3x faster rendering than my previous computer (cpu to cpu) - I just grabbed a random scene and rendered it with my old laptop then rendered the same with the new computer... nothing scientific and always mentalray with same settings between the rigs.

new system
Intel Core i7-3930K (12 threads @ 3.2GHZ vs 8 @ 1.6GHZ previously)
32GB Ram (vs 6 before)
Thermaltake Overseer RX-I Full Tower with Corsair H80 high performance liquid CPU cooler
27? screen (vs 17 laptop before)
Inno3D 2GB GTX670 graphics card vs 230M

Regarding repartitioning the drive, tried that... always just shows 2TB and 3TB+ Unlock doesn't work anymore since the upgrade to W7Pro. Any other ideas? I have twin barracudas... the upgrade also threw one of my backups (I have twin 3TBs for that too) into haywire and don't load properly anymore either. Pain in the ass if you ask me... at least 3DS Max 2012 works!!!

I got the graphics card because I also do lots of work on Sony Vega and version 11 has GPU rendering, so that will save me loads of time.

could try wiping the drive using boot & nuke, linux command line or some other way.
could try contacting the manufacturer.

probably best to keep unrelated discussion out of this thread so nvidia driver team don't have to read our random convos.

copied from benchmark thread as relevant :

Got the following errors in 3dsmax 2012 (2013 won't work with gtx 670)

>>Any other ideas?

that is odd, as long as you have a compatible bios(nearly all boards after p67) and a 64bit vista or w7 it should work without a hitch.

iRay does not yet support Kepler chipset, only up to Fermi. iRay renders with any 6x series card will use CPU only until Nvidia supports it.

There is a good review in reference to "I don't see the point of the quatros either." by Kim Lee & Joe Gunn:

When you say unstable can you clarify that?

Do you get a CER pup-up saying an error occurred (if so did you submit any)?

Have you tried D3D in addition to Nitrous?

Does it occur if 3ds Max just sets there, when modeling, when rendering, or ???

Are you running nvidia driver 301.42 stable? Have you tried the 304.48 or 304.79 beta drivers?

Any additional info would be helpful.

re: review above wrt I don't see the point of the quadros either

if we're comparing quadros with the gtx range, in order to consider value for money, we should try the following.

quadro 5000 : $1,749

gtx 690 : $999

comparing against an older $500 GTX 580 isn't particuarly helpful.

Quadro 6000 vs. gtx 690 chart/benchmarks would be interesting to see if anyone comes across anything like that. There are times when you just need the best performance you can lay your hands on regardless of cost (within reason).
