3DS MAX 9
show user profile  CreativeMinds
Hi all!

I am new to 3DS MAX 9 and I have some questions. I do a lot of product designs and I do a lot of 3D modeling and rendering. Beside using 3DS MAX 9, what other plug in software do I need in order to get the realist or realism rendering? Most of the materials I apply a lot in my products are Glossy Paint Finishes (kind of like auto body paint), Chrome Polished Finishes, and Wood Textures. So again, I apply a lot of textures such as glossy paint finishes, wood textures and chrome polishes.

I was ready about the V-Ray which is a plug in to make a more realism rendering but not sure if there are better plug ins that will give you a more realism texture rendering.

Thanks for any advice!!

You don't need any plugin.

Vray is great and all...but so is Mental Ray which is built right in.

And scanline has it's place too.

For realisim....it's who's behind the controls that makes it look good....not the plugin or rendererererer...err.er

max 9 and mental ray are perfect. will get great results, without the need for vray. if you can get hold of a copy of 2010 it would be even better, with their importons system which should give better results than final gather and global illunimation should.

also a copy with architectual and design shaders in- i believe the copy after max 9- means you will get more realistic textures alot easier and have alot more control.

its all do-able in max 9, just slightly easier if you know how in later copies

Do any of you know a good website that will have tutorials for creating car paint textures, wood textures and polished chrome or polished metal textures? I would like to download the tutorials so I can play around with it.

Thanks Reality Man!

OK, I got a really stupid question. In the Material Editor, how do I add a new ball so I can create a new texture. I found a tutorial I want to play around with but there are no extra new balls for me to make new materials.

Thanks!

right click and choose 6x4. if you run out just delete a ball- doesnt affect the scene- and then you can work on that ball with a new texture

I forgot to add this car paint link yesterday:

9 parts of pure education.

I only want to include it 'cuz that car is so wicked cool looking!

You only need Mr. Bucks tutorials really.

s_purs,

When I clicked on the 6x4, it did not create more balls. It just made all the balls smaller so you can see all the balls.

I am still trying to create more balls so I can play around with textures.

Thanks!

oh thats all the balls you can have. just click the cross to delete ones you have already. it wont effect them in the scene as long as you have it applied to an object- just make 24 boxes in the scene and apply each material to it if you want, then if you ever need it again just use the picker tool to get the material back into the material editor

Happydude2 made a tutorial on material slots:

Which is really just what s_purs said but with pictures and the likes.

Reality Man,

I need some help on this tutorial. In the beginning, it tells me to:

Select the MR Area Omni, select the modify panel and switch it on (see left).

After I selected the MR Area Omni, where do I find the MODIFY PANEL so I can switch it on?

Below if the tutorial I am working on:

The modify panel has tabs...and after creating something-in short- click on the second tab.
Just woke up from long nap.
And when you create a MR lite(or any lite for that matter) it's ON by default anyway:
