This looks great!
But damn! Because I'm still using max 9 I've always posponed looking for the difference between the Design and the not Design versions. And now I'm lost (my fault, I know).
Can anyone provide a link to a comprehensive documentation about that?

aww..they changed the interface. im not a fan of the new autodesk UIs. other than that, the functionality they added is pretty sweet.

roseman: you can change your interface whenever you like, its under the customize > custom UI and defaults switcher.

Grap: i wouldnt worry about the design vs non design versions mate - its just a few materials and defaults that get switched around, you can actually just use normal max if you have design, you can change it in the custom ui defaults swticher yourself. As far as i know, the UI in max is designed for people who are used to character modelling, animation, rigging, environments etc - the only difference in design in that the defaults are setup for architectural renderings, however the settings can be annoying such as default instance instead of copy, arch materials (which you wont use if your using vray anyway - you use vray materials), photometric lights - (same again with vray - vray lights), and the list goes on. Dont stress about the two, just pick one and learn - ive gone from original max to design specifically for architectural reasons, and i see very little advantages of switching over, in fact, i use the 3dsmax original UI anyway, so its pointless for me.

Im with horizen - nice colours lol.

Thanks a lot for the clarification, donvella. Much appreciated :))
I'll stick to regular max then (when/if I upgrade)

the new features sound amazing. it looks like they dealt with some shortcomings of max that are really annoying.

nemo out

"Note: we are only announcing 3ds Max Design today. Don't read anything into this please! 3ds Max will be officially announced later. There are no new feature differences (beyond what feature differences exist today with 2009)."

So why do they advertise it as 3ds Max Design then if it's the same as 3ds Max? Or am I missing something? If there is nothing different between the two except what already exists in 2009, why not just announce 3ds Max Design/3ds Max same time?

Seems like Design is getting all the features you would expect to get in the non-design version but with extra features only for Design as well.

This actually looks cool if it is being integrated into Max:

Design has the lighting analysis system and Max (non-design) has the SDK, for writing plug-ins and customizing max for you production pipe line. Here is a document about it:

Cheers :)
