3ds max concave reflection problem
Does anyone know why are reflections distorted on concave surfaces like inside a hemisphere . Using 3ds max 2013 design. The same thing happens with vray and mentalray so I asssumed it's not a render engine problem.
Any help apreciated. Thanks

Probably something to do with . . . wait for it . . . physics.
Either that, or the Kingons. When in doubt, it's always the Klingons fault.

I'm sure it's not a normal behavior and has nothig to do with physics. It works fine on convex surfaces. It should have a smooth transition not a chopy one. The sphere has plenty of polygons to work with so that's not the problem. Anyone else?

it looks like there is a mesh smooth group problem.
you gotta check if all the polygons are in the same mesh smooth group

maybe slap a uvw map over it

Thanks guys for your replys.
@Kirk I can't argue with what you said there, however it still looks weird to me. I mean I'm looking at a chrome bowl or smth and dont see this distortion naturaly.
The sphere is made out of 60 segments with the same smoothing group and I don't know if the uvw affects the reflection in any way unless theres a map applied to it.
Heres another test. I dont know it may be me :-?

I guess case closed then. Thanks.

smoothing groups and uv maps deff do affect how your reflections will turn out
there's also a lot you can do within the material itself (depending on which you're using)
yea, the render looks good... akward, but good
