3ds Max - Basic Modeling Problems
show user profile  Redweasel
Hello Guys,

The last 6 months I have worked with Blender and the workflow feels very natural to me. Due to the fact that I want to work with UDK and Game Engines in general I am trying the 3DS MAX 2012 30 Day Trail.
Even if I really like some tools, I encountered some problems I can't really solve (Even with the advice of mighty mr. Google :D).

For a better understanding I provide some Screenshots. Many thanks in advance!
Just one note before I start: I'll compare a lot of stuff to Blender. I just do this to better explain what I want. It isn't my intention to complain about 3ds Max
but to gain some insight to get along with modeling.

Problem: Connecting Vertices to Edges/Polys
Connecting Edges to Polys

In Blender you can choose 2 vertices and press F to create an edge between them or you can choose 3/4 vertices to create a tri/quad.

I tried to achieve this in 3ds Max but I can't figure it out. Firstly I tried to select the edges and using the bridge function and it worked,
but weirdly just for the 2 outside polygons (marked with red dots on the screenshot). Then I tried to choose the create cap tool instead and had the same problem.
Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Im not sure if this has something to do with the direction of the normals. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but it seems that I even have to manage the direction of "vertices-normals" and edge-normals". In Blender I just could press calculate normals and most of the time I din't have to flip normals at all.

Thanks again.

bridge tool only works for two edges that aren't touching- max prefers quads to tris and goes to lengths to maintain this- you can 'pull edges- which is selecting an edge or edges, pressing (and holding) shift and sliding the edge(s) to a new location, you can then target weld or whatever the verts to wherever

The bridge tool will work on two edges that are touching if you mess with the Bridge Adjacent setting.

Yes, that worked too thanks.
I don't wan't to open a new thread for this so I just ask here again:

I'm having some problems with doubled vertices on the same position. I can't fix it with the weld tool (tried different threshold values)

EDIT: ok I removed an unnecessary face and could remove the vertex, sorry for wasting your time K-tonne, I need to pay more attention

if they don't weld they're probably not directly connected with an edge
happens sometimes when you're cutting faces and miss- other processes make it happen too
in vert mode- select the area of the vert with the lasso so you don't miss any (check you've only selected the ones you want aswell as some others around the other side accidenly), press connect' then 'collapse'
this will move the vert you originally placed a tiny bit so after you've pressed 'connect' you could try to select the vert or verts that isn't the original and move them away slightly and 'target weld' them to the original preserving it's position
if this doesn't work you might have a hole instead of a poly- select the area with the lasso in border mode to find out- open edges will be highlit if there are any
