3ds max 2012, problem with selection

I recently downloaded 3ds max 2012, an upgrade from 3ds max 2010

And I have come accross a little problem regarding selection in general(face,edge etc)

On max 2010 you could double click a face to select the face behind it as shown:




you could also use this feature with pressing "Ctrl" for multiple selection


but On max 2012, it seem you can't do that anymore, you can select a, e.g, face which is located behind

another face by double clicking, but it seems you cant do this multiple times with Ctrl as shown (I rotated for this example):


I know in the scenes above the easiest thing to do would be to rotate the view, but at times it can get a little tricky when
doing scenes like rooms etc where other polygons get in the way

so I'm wondering if my installation went wrong or is this feature is no longer on max 12?

I have a dim recollection that someone at AD mentioned changing the way the ray-firing for selection worked - the way it used to work was apparently 'technically' wrong, in that rays would often misfire through front facing polys and select backfaces unintentionally. The idea now is supposed to be that it more 'intelligently' selects the faces pointing towards you, lessening the chances of accidentally selecting backfaces.

I think now you have to triple click to select through a front face - but it'll still select the front face too. Not ideal but I guess it's more correct behaviour in the code or something.

mmm, even by tripple clicking it doesn't select multiple faces behind faces, I take it ill have to rotate more, well here is another question, so I dont open another thread.

how do I get rid of this shadowing?

it was never about double or triple clicking, first click would array all the verts/faces/edges/objects/whatevers in the direction you selected and select the one closest to you, all subsequent clicks would cycle through that array from closest to furthest. And yea i dont know why but they broke that in 2012.

Yeah, tired brain, don't know why I started talking about double and triple clicks! The behaviousr I get in the 2012's I've used is - first click - select front face - second click - select same front face - third click - select back face. After that, clicking again selects the same back face - next click - cycle to next back face. And so on.

But yeah, even with one more click for every selection cycle, holding ctrl seems to disallow me selecting backfaces now...

I used to hit a lot of problems where backfaces would select instead of the front face I wanted, simply because they were too close to camera, or a bit of it went off-screen, or it was at a funny angle. Fix one thing, break another :)

As for your shadow problem, click the viewport tag that says Ambient Occlusion and HW, you should find a menu called Lighting and Shadows where you can turn that stuff off.
