Any one play with pdf 3d?

Anyone know why my tyres on my truck move to a different zyx space? (exporting as 3ds)

Anyone miss me? ;)

Max could use a different co-ordinate system. Z is up in Max. In some packages, it's away from the screen, as it were, rather than up. Are things coming in at the wrong angle, or simply rotating incorrectly?

Of course I miss you!

I tried to play with 3D PDF, but I seem to remember that it needed the max file converting to a specific file type which involved a commercial plugin, or the more expensive version of Acrobat than I had. It may have changed since then though.

dunno about the tyres I'm afraid

I think I started posting regularly on Maxforums after you took a leave of absence, but I have been a long-time lurker, so yeah, I guess I missed you. Shame you weren't here for the carnage that was SigWars - though the thread's not closed...

If they're just moving position, check your pivots. There are a number of reasons why exported objects appear in "different" places when they're imported elsewhere. A little bit more info would be nice too. Number of Objects in scene, whether or not there's a hierarchy, where they're getting moved to... stuff like that.

:) Aw thanks DD, How you doing? Hows the family? Both at school now? x

Hiya Nik, ah I didn't know that! Any way around that? A couple of my tyres are floating above the truck and there is a side rail which has moved to the left and up...hehe and thanks ;) x

Hehe hi Mike, yeah I recognise your name, I lurked for a bit before my leave of absence :) I'll have to catch up with the sig wars thread and the spam thread.

Yeah the plugins are for other acrobats, I am using. Acrobat Pro extended (what I am using) is supposed to be able to convert a few file types to the U3d it requires but after playing all morning exporting and bringing in many file types it was only actually the 3ds that worked. (kept all my layers and naming conventions where as when DWG and DXF lose all that.

Hi Dave yeah I was just thinking maybe it something to do with groups or attaching, I'll check the pivots too. Theres a number of objects in scene, (its a truck) so there is a sort of hierachy (not at my work terminal so can't give specifics cos my memory is shot.

Thanks everyone :)

Hi everyone

Just to let anyone knows who searches for this...after trying pivots, grouping and attaching, it was the latter.

Attaching worked? Still sounds like it was a pivot issue then. Attaching all objects together = everything shares the same pivot point. You must remember to Reset XForm and collapsing the stack if you move a pivot in Max, because when you export without doing that it very much likes to forget the changes.

With exporting to various game engines and model viewers, this has always been the case for me. Sometimes I will just attach objects together but there will be many instances where that simply isn't a smart move in the long run.

Ok thank you Dave, I will do that as I havn't done the xform thang.

I will make a note of this because I think we are also about to start doing work for VBS2. I feel a new learning curve up ahead!

Missy, that's the Army training simulator, Virtual Battlespace, isn't it? I'm kind of jealous, that sounds like a fun project.

Yes it is Nik, I'm not sure of the details yet.

I know that they are currently in process of updating thier software.
I've been told I am expected to be 'involved' and that its a different way of modelling, Ive not seen it yet but I'm looking forward to it. Most of my clients want 3d models...but dont know what to do with them so they have one or two renders, sometimes I'm lucky and they ask for a bit of animation but thats only happened a couple of times.

I've just finished updating the Sa80 for a 'Virtual task trainer' (horrible output, sees no materials and is so jaggy' looks like real bad aa' thats why I have been looking into the PDF thing it would be nice to give them their model to play with and as a training tool for the young un's because from what I see so far its just missing the lesson panel, well I'm thinking I may be able to intergrate the two things. I know you make PDF into fillable forms (livecycle) cos had to do it but I want it to be able to tell you if you are wrong or right. I think that goes over to flash but I'm really outdated on that (Dirty Fword) so I'm not sure of if you take that functiionality into PDF, anyway just thinking really of how I can achieve what they need without it having to 'go outside' to go into the VTT.

Oh dear look how much I've typed! sorry ;)

Although I am open to options I am lmited by them.

They have come to us after going to an outside contractor for the Vtt. I was to supply one model. There was quite a hoohah, because the client saw my model, then when returned via the viewer it looked completely different (materials, jaggys etc) my client was not happy, contractors tried to blame me but client could see it on my screen and via renders. They are obviously in the contract now so it has to be used but from what I've seen of the vtt it just has a 3d space where you can hide or move rotate parts or whole, with a panel that has a lesson plan of short animations and q's and a's

They have now just tasked me with quite an inventory, but they are not sure what to do, they are not happy with final product but they are happy with me, hence I got more work. They are going to look at other Vtt's. In the mean time I sent them a draft of a 3d pdf and they got quite excited, so I would like to try and add more functionality.

We can't use the DXF viewer as the one onthe intranet is outdated and won't open models from our version of max, can you add text etc to that, I've not persued it too far once I found the intranet wouldn't open any of our models.

So if you can think of anything where we don't have to spend money, I am open.

Let me add to that with my personal experience using 3D objects inside Acrobat documents.
