I'm not too good at this stuff but aren't the aircraft shooting what is ahead of them so the images is at an oblique angle rather than straight up and down. surely there is a way to calculate the height of something based on how much of each photo it takes up at a certain distance? (that is if the technology is measuring distances at all)

From what i can gather it`s a technique using multiple cameras, similar to what the kinect does, or autodesk Photofly, using reference points from different angles, to calculate geometry/textures..

That technology (although an older version) has been used over some Swedish cities, available on for example.

Very earth needs to use it asap.
Won't be long before the first 3d game with the world as your playfield shows up.

google maps might be already using something like this... It doesn' tlook exactly like it, but when the world view of chicago is selected, they have 3d structures.. Just pointing that out.
