I don't see why there would be a problem like you're describing if the dwg file you're importing actually has AutoCAD 3d solids. I suspect that the AutoCAD file only has 2D elements or wireframes (cages only) without faces.
Try this:
Start a new drawing in AutoCAD.
Create a rectangle.
Extrude the rectangle by x amount
Save the drawing
Import it in 3ds max and render

If you still see nothing I'm stumped.

Thanks for your reply

I am using mechanical desktop software (Parametric Autocad) , and I have my solids created there , after i import it to 3dmax6 i see only the outside frame and when it is rendered i see only the frame with no rendered faces.

Is it something that has to do with my 3dmax6 rendering settings?
Your help is greatly appreciated

If your objects in ACAD were created using a polyline, make sure that when importing in 3ds max a menu appears and before hitting ok to import you have to check the box "view in renderer". Perhaps this would help

dwg import in max was improved greatly in 7 and up I believe. Prior to 7 I had constant issues with flipped faces and etc.

apparently mechanical desktop has a life of its own. Combined with max6 seems deadly :)

perhaps you could export it to a different format, like .3ds so that max will have less trouble with it?..

you could also post your .dwg files somewhere on-line.. I could attempt to open it in 9 and if it looks good I could export to .3ds for you to use or something.. not sure if there's a max downsave option..
