I have a battle scene to recreate and long list of co-ordinates for placing all the units does anyone know how to make 3ds max take a list of co-ords for where it goes and 2 id sets (type of unit (model) and the skin to go on it (if it could change the type of material ID that would be awesome)).

Also I've been trying to find a good studio rendering scene for mental ray.

is it really so many that you couldnt place it by hand? ;)

I am afraid only max script will help here. Something that transforms your input list into coordinates in max and places stuff there...

unless you fancy placing 1,467 individually?

oh oops... well then, no way by hand ;)

I dont really think there is something existing that would work for your specific needs. Unfortunatly, I suck pretty much with maxscript, but maybe someone else can help.

A legend by the name of Garp sometimes enters the matrix here and solves all your problems. Bare in mind, he is French and it is 2:16am over there now. So just be patient :) I'm sure your problem can easily be fixed. If I knew MaxScript I'm sure I could solve it.

Ok Its 1:40am for me too mind :P
and on another note in 2012 it the run from particle birth doesn't seem to work for AVI's
EDIT: or any other animated thing that can play :P

Replies can take a while (days), or can be instant here. Constant bumping is frowned on, but the odd bump to take something back to the first page is still ok.

We have no PM system.

What you are asking can be done with Maxscript relatively easily. There are sections of the help file like "reading and writing to external files" that would help you.

For a studio render, simply recreate the basics of a simple studio and you should be there. I have an excellent one I've been modifying for years, but I can't share it, my apologies. But, it's not hard to do. Look at a real studio for the size of objects you are rendering, and copy it in Max.
