2 Constraints 1 Bone
show user profile  herfst1
If you watch the video you'll see my problem. If you don't want to watch the video here's my problem: I have a spine setup of squshy bones and I need to use Lookat constraints so they keep the flow, but I also need an orientation constraint to allow lateral rotations, but I can't link both at the same time. I've tried getting around this by position constraining helpers whose pivots are offset so the pivot's near the spine but the helper is floating away from the mesh so that I can control the position. That works, no problem, but the rotations aren't transferring.

"so they keep the flow" - not sure what you mean by that - i imagine that you'll have a bunch of these which create the spine, are you going for additive movement from bone to bone, like spline ik?

you can group that setup, adjust the pivot, create a controller for the group object and use that for the rotation.. with the right gimbal order it might work fine

*group instead of using that rear ori constraint

Yeah, I'm not using IK. By, "keeping the flow" I mean, like IK. Here's the rig I've set up, now if only the bones would work like they should when I link them up.

actually all you have to do is select your bone with the look-at constraint and instead of using the world as it's up node, choose the helper its looking at - now when you rotate that helper the bone will rotate too

keep in mind your bones will flip if the rotation orders of it and the helper are different

- for a fish rig a custom spline ik would be best imo, but yours is looking good

Excellent, just tested it out. Thanks Digital3Ds a.k.a. Digs.

P.S. the tutorial I learned from showed how to do it with spline IK but then went on to make it the way I've done it as you have more control with the spine twisting motions and where they go... or something like that. So I forgot about spline IK and judy do it this way.

Just finished skinning, thought I'd show, since I posted the helper animation before.
