2012 - Animating Visibility with Curve Editor Not Working
show user profile  peterjung
I just started using 2012 and I cannot get the visbility of an object controlled by a Visibility Track in the curve editor to animate.

I want objects to slowly fade to invisible. This works perfectly in previous version of Max but I cannot get it to work in 2012.

I have tried both Mental Ray and Vray but neither will work and the object only renders as visible?

The view ports also do not show any change in the visibility either.

It gets stranger still - with an older file I created with a previous version of Max the visibility renders correctly but it is not reflected in the viewport?

Any ideas on what I am missing here?

hmmm... I found the following from here:
http://www.davetyner.com/forum/showthread.php?8837-3DS-Max-Animate-Object-Transparency

There are a number of ways to animate transparency on an object. You can animate the opacity/transparency channel on the material for example. Another way you can do it is animate the objects visibility track. Before you do that however, you have to set it's visibility controller to a bezier float. This will give you the ability to create keyframes for an objects visibility.

You do this by selecting an object you want to be transparent and type this string in the immediate window..

Code:
$.visibility = bezier_float()and then press enter and type
Code:
$.visibility=1and press enter.

This seems to fix the problem...but I have never had to do this before?

Is this a bug in 2012?

It was already like that in max 9. I don't think it's a bug.

I have never had to do this though to get the visibility animation to render correctly in any previous version of Max that I have used ?

MR doesn't support visibility, you'll need to create a blend material and give one of the materials 0 opacity. At least it's like that in 2010.
