| max 2010/2011 vs older versions |

I recently had to reinstall max 8 to get access to a plugin, anyway what hit me right away is vastly superior viewport performance in max 8 as opposed to the newer versions, so out of curiosity i tried other versions too and it seems that everything up to max 9 runs much better then anything after. The things im talking about are buggy quad view rendering/buttons (which randomly go blank rather often), the awkward stuttering while rotating the viewport even in empty scenes and just as well the overall fps, all of these issues are nonexistant in max 9 and lower. So what happened? Why did they change their viewport setting to worse? I got all the latest patches/fixes for max 2011 but maybe theres like a button in settings i have to seek out to turn the "good mode" on (with max u never know)?
just in case system specs: e8400 4gb ram 285gtx

Well people kept bitching for things like real-time viewport shadows, viewport ambient occlusion, etc. This meant they had to change it. It does seem worse than it used to be at the moment.

Performance dropped at 3dsmax 2009, when Autodesk turned on run-time type information to catch a bunch of software instabilities. Personally, I would have fixed the bugs & kept the speed, but AD chose a different approach which resulted in partially improved stability with a performance penalty.

My guess it's those useless viewcubes and steering wheels....even when turned off.
But you're right...staring with max 9 they made the viewport speed MUCH faster...it was in one of their videos and they compared it to max 8 and it blew max 8 outta the water.

I remember when I upgraded to max 2009 from max 9, at first it all seemed fine, but then it hit me. sadly I had moved pretty much all of my work and started new projects already under max 2009, but I have to say that it has been the worse Max version I've worked with, since I don't know when. 2010 which Im currently on right now, is still bugging me but way less than 2009, at this point I don't even know if I want to know about future versions since all those new features I don't use.

Here's the problem I am having that sounds similar. When using my wacom I'm getting choppy viewport performance when I navigate a scene. Also when I access the quad menu my cursor turns into a friggin' eraser. The problem is even more dramatic when objects are selected.
When using my mouse the viewport navigation and quad menu display fine.
Jing doesn't capture how choppy it is in comparison, but it's drastic. Here is what I'm seeing:
Object selected: Wacom: 300ish fps (feels like 12fps) Mouse: 370ish fps
No Object selected: Wacom: 400ish fps (feels like 20fps) Mouse: 450ish fps
I have the crappy windows tablet driver turned off, but when I'm in max I still get the annoying blue orb when I right click which tells me perhaps max turns it back on or it has a tablet driver built in that conflicting with the wacom driver...?
Is this the same problem you guys are having?
