The Selection Floater is like the old-style Select by Name dialog, except that it's non-modal, i.e. you can leave it open and work on your scene at the same time. Quite handy when you have lots of selection changes to do. It used to be accessible under the Tools menu. Well, not anymore. But you can get it back. In the Customize UI dialog, under the Menus panel, unfold the Tools menu in the right pane, browse down the Action list to Selection Floater and drag it to the Tools menu where you want it (just above Display Floater would be a good place). Et voilà.

when you detach stuff from a polgyon and you type in a name of an existing item instead of a new name the stuff gets transported to the existing item

I tried in both max 9 and max 2012, it doesn't work. The detached part is renamed. Is there an option to prevent automatic renaming?

You can clone materials in slate material editor , just hold down shift and move the selected items , which one you want to duplicate .
Maybe that's not a remarkable discovery , but I'm pretty happy with it :D .
